5/3/15 – Cole Finishes 6th in 9th Annual KY Junior Masters

colejrmaster1

The Kentucky Junior Masters is an elite, invite only golf tournament displaying the talent of Kentucky’s top 50 junior golfers.  It was held on May 2 and May 3 at Keene Trace Golf Courses.

May 2 – Keene Run – 6990 yards –  Cole had a great day of ball striking, hitting 11 fairways and 15 greens.  He couldn’t get the putts to fall, leaving many of them short, and garnering only two birdies on the day.  He finished day 1 with a score of 75 and in 9th place.

May 3 – Champions Trace – 6982 yards – Cole’s ball striking was not quite as good as day one, hitting only 8 fairways and 10 greens.  The first cut of rough at Champions was more difficult to hit from than Keene.   Cole’s putting was much like the first day with only two birdies and leaving many just on the edge of the hole.  He finished the day with a 78, which proved to be a decent score as compared to the field.  Only 14 of the 50 juniors shot below 80 on the day.

Final – Cole’s two day total of 153 was good enough to tie for 6th with EKU commit, Kyle Jury and HS junior Seth Phulpager.

3/22/15 – Cole Finishes 6th at Cherry Blossom

Cole played his first stroke play tournament of the year at Cherry Blossom GC, Georgetown, KY in a Golfweek Junior Tour event.  He shot a 75 on Saturday.  He was even par going into the tough finishing holes of 16(bogey), 17(double) and 18(par).  He shot a one over par 73 on Sunday finishing much stronger in those closing holes(bogey, birdie, par).  His two day total of 148 garnered him a 6th place finish.  His chipping and putting was somewhat rusty coming out of the winter but hitting 70% of the greens allowed him time to regain his touch.

6/7/2014: Cole Qualifies for KY State Amateur

6/7/14 – Cole made the best of a tough day by utilizing his scrambling skills at

Bowling Green CC to secure the last qualifying spot for the 2014 Ky State Amateur.

He hit 9 of 14 fairways but his iron play was lacking, only hitting 5 greens.  While

not his best performance, it was good enough to qualify him for this year’s state

tournament to be held at Cherry Blossom CC in Georgetown, KY on June 17-19.

3/16/14 : Day 2 MDGT Match Play

03/16/14 – The weather on Sunday, the second day of the MDGT match play, was not as favourable as Saturday.   The 32 remaining players started play in 35 degree temps and 15 MPH winds.  They finished with sleet and freezing rain along with the wind and cold temps.

Cole played the number one seeded Brendon Doyle, a St X senior.   It was a difficult day for both players but the match was determined on the green.   Cole wasn’t as sharp with the putter as he was the previous day.   Doyle won the match 5 and 3.

March 14, 2014:  The MDGT Match Play Championship started today at Seneca GC with 64 players in the Championship Boy’s bracket.  Cole was paired against high school junior Jimmy Gates of Louisville, Ky.  The winter rust was on Cole’s game to begin the match as could be seen from his ball striking and short game.  He finished the front nine holes three down to Gates.

The back nine was a different story.  Cole fought back by parring and winning the first three holes on the back to square the match. After halving number 13 with Gates, Cole finished with par, birdie, par to win the next three holes and the match, 3 and 2.  Cole hit 3 of 5 fairways and 5 of 7 greens on the back nine.  He finished with 8 of 12 fairways & 7 of 16 greens for the match.

Cole will play the #1 seed, Brendon Doyle on Sunday morning.
